Healing Hands
Synopsis:
A deaf boy longing for acceptance finds himself in a situation that will change his understanding of what it means to be "complete."
Director’s Statement:
Growing up as the only deaf child in my family and town was a challenge to discover how I “fit in,” especially after an experience at age 5 which would change me and my perspective of the world forever. That deeply personal experience was the inspiration for me to write, direct, and edit this film. My goal with this film was to help hearing audiences understand the impact society has in shaping the self-image of d/Deaf children, as well as the impact that positive d/Deaf role models play in restoring that self-image. Making this film has been a healing journey for me, deeply supported by the dedication of the cast and crew. Special thanks to producers Rachel Jobin and Andy Racoti, director of photography Davin Fitch, 1st AD Dan Beard, sound mixer David Feagan, award-winning Deaf actress Sandra Mae Frank (New Amsterdam, NBC), and the breakout star and first-time deaf actor Alexander Campos III.
This film was made as a thesis project for the graduate program in the Film & Digital Media Department at Baylor University.
